WEAVING ENCOUNTERs

The location of the proposed project is a site within a dense cultural framework in the city of Amsterdam: The Oosterdok.

The Oosterdok consist in a series of docks eastwards from the nearby Centraal Station, surrounded, among others, by the Openbare Bibliotheek (Jo Coenen, 2007) and the Conservatorium (de Architecten Cie, 2007)- neighbouring buildings that act as landmarks on the stroll towards the Station-, the Muziekgebouw / Bimhuis floating on the IJ river (3xN Architects, 2005), the NEMO Museum built on the tunnel which reaches North Amsterdam after plunging into the IJ (Renzo Piano, 1997) and the ARCAM (Architecture Centre Amsterdam- René van Zuuk, 2003) on the edge of the water.

The site constitutes a core of multiple communication, crossroads for opposing pathways, propeller knot of exploratory and labyrinthic routes into the urban patchwork, linked to it by various arteries suspended over de water.

The proposal for the occupation of the site results thus from its own nature a hybrid building acting as a trail-gatherer, biding welcome and shelter, encouraging curiosity towars different glances and urban routes, a mixed activity interchanging device, an idea development artifact.
A transit space endowed with its own appealing force, capable of hosting events, fashion shows, concerts, photshoots, meetings coworkin, etc. or for the creation of other commercial-social activities.

The proposal falls under a city model where the needs of citizens prevail over the growth.

THE DEFIANCE is to approach, on the basis of common sense, a SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT, turning the intervened cityscape site into a true family core and contributing to humanize and restore the human sense of liveability of the city.

THE MAIN CHALLENGE is to REUSE AND RETHINK UNDERUSED SPACES in order to benefit the community.

The entire zone is studied and analysed and the intervention is performed thorough all the area, but not forgetting its particularities, creating an enable environment for the meeting of the citizens.

A multifunctional and multidisciplinary space, which embraces people. A space opened to the interrelationship. A meeting area, a relating place, a communication square for the people who live in the city, an environment to walk and designed to rode by bicycle relishing it, a comfortable and nice place to enjoy, giving this way to the citizens a more balanced life.

Taking into account that the architectural and urban design of the city is conditioned by its own origin, and Amsterdam rests on land reclaimed from the sea. It is created an urban ensemble, connecting the sea and the city, with the orientated intention of stimulating and planning a harmonious development in an environment compromised by two important structures (road and railways).

Concluding the intervention in two concrete walls, one emerging from the earth and the other from the sea, as if they were two breakwaters. In the top, they are aligned with the overall structure of the site, in the bottom, the area, they do not cover space at all, and consequently it is transferred to the city.
