Blurring the lines of conventional environments

Before tackling the future design of work, learning and retail environments, it is imperative to establish that these spaces where the average person spends approximately 80% of their time, affect the individuals psyche and productivity. It is important to understand the trends and changes in needs for employees, students and consumers and to tailor these spaces to reflect these changing needs. For this purpose I believe in creating a versatile, adaptable, open-space and multi-functional facility space, to promote the growing need for flexibility. Technological advancements will also play a crucial part in converting open spaces to instantly accessible and adaptable spaces as more people gravitate towards e-commerce, and remote education and work. The key is to establish a space that can be converted and remains comfortable, essentially blurring the lines and eliminating the conventional work and learning space.

I envision remote access to project work on any available background and allow of streamlined virtual presence. For when human interaction is needed, ultra-open spaces with glass and minimal walls to diminish the notion of bureaucratic confinement and enhance workers productivity.
I envision these spaces will incorporate movable classroom sessions where projector screens will be used on natural backdrops to give students a hands-on experience. Teaching methods will change to become more interactive in nature, so it is expected that the class will comprise of open space, with plenty of light and comfort in mind. I believe Kindergarten, primary and elementary schools will have classrooms that are difficult to identify as conventional classrooms and gravitate more towards a “fun” learning environment with visibly no individual desks. Secondary and postgraduate may have more structured learning and thus will have comfortable sit down areas where some material is best absorbed.
Retail spaces will utilize the use of automated processes, using mobile phones, smart mirrors, drive-through shopping options, virtual styling, scanning QR codes, automated product customization etc. The key is minimize stock to allow vendors to easily relocate their stores (like a musical-chairs for stores concept) allowing stores to try several locations to increase footfall, meanwhile ensuring the little time consumers have is used efficiently, thereby enhancing the customer experience.
