Art has often sought to challenge perception, questioning the status quo and the way we look at things. FLIPPED as a pavillion for the arts aims to challenge Venice’s relationship with the water and flip it on its head. In FLIPPED instead of architecture sitting on top the water, the water sits on top of the pavillion and becomes its architecture. In FLIPPED water and boats go over the bridge and people go under them.

First, the erosion of Venice is imagined beyond its current banks, onward to create a series of performance and cultural spaces. This extension of the fabric of Venice extends the city’s iconic canals while simultaneously symbolizing ice caps- the melting of which has caused the rise of water in Venice. This allows not only for a new experience for visitors of Venice, but also a new cultural awareness of environmental problems of the 21st century.

Venice is a beautiful city located in northeastern Italy, built on an archipelago of 118 small islands (if we include the islands of Murano and Burano) that are linked by 455 bridges. The largest bridges are the Rialto Bridge, Ponte dell’Accademia, Ponte degli Scalzi and the Ponte della Costituzione, all of which span the Grand Canal.

The only traffic in the city consists of the boats navigating the canals that separate the islands, the interior of Venice is completely given to pedestrians.

The beauty of Venice is found not only in its unique urban morphology, but also in its beautiful palaces, such as the Doge’s Palace, Palazzo Fortuny or the Palazzo Vernier dei Leoni, today a museum that displays the Peggy Guggenheim collection.

Venice is renowned for its extensive artistic and cultural heritage.

Venice’s immense cultural legacy, spanning its thousand year history, was acknowledged by UNESCO in 1987 when it named the city a World Heritage Site, for its historic centre and lagoon.

Since 1895 the city has hosted the Venice Biennale, the name commonly used to refer to the International Art Exhibition of Venice, which includes the Venice International Film Festival, the International Architecture Exhibition, the International Theatre Festival, the Festival of Contemporary Dance and the Festival of Contemporary Music. Due to its history and prestige, the Biennale is one of the most important contemporary art events in the world.

The objective of this competition for architecture students and young architects, Island of Arts (IOA) Venice, consists in imagining a space that can host different activities linked to art and culture, located in a unique city as delicate as Venice.

Due to its privileged location, the goal of the proposed space is to become an international reference for the world of art and culture, where many different kinds of events can be held. Theatrical performances, ephemeral art installations, Carnival celebrations, temporary exhibitions, movie screenings…will all provide the required importance to this new space.

The proposal should aspire to be an obligatory visit for tourists in Venice. A space for people involved in the world of art and culture to meet, and where the unexpected can be accommodated.

The following prizes will be awarded to proposals that best meet the purpose of the competition:
