- Turn on the radio;
- Read something lighthearted and entertaining, such as The New Yorker magazine. That way, if you come across something interesting that sparks a thought, you won't have to worry about remembering it later. You'll remember this because nothing important enough to write your paper about will be published in such a shaky publication as The New Yorker.
What to jot down during the brainstorming process:
- Any and every thought that comes to mind, regardless of how bizarre or unrelated it appears to be in relation to the current issue;
- Keep in mind that certain concepts will trigger different thoughts; try to keep track of them all until you have something that is directly related to your topic. I can't stress this enough: don't let a thought go unnoticed because you're too busy pondering another one! This is critical because, when you return with a new brain, those dead considerations and affiliations from before will be resurrected. How to make sure you're creative:
- Watch a film, preferably one that is entertaining (not cerebral). This will encourage you to think more creatively and innovatively than if you were watching a documentary or instructive film. That way, during the brainwave meeting, all of your thoughts are focused on how they identify with what's going on in your general surroundings at the time you're watching/tuning in, rather than what might happen in each scene.
- Listen to music, any music will suffice. Perhaps you should inform your readers of your competence in the area that calls for action. You should also state the values, beliefs, and assumptions that have caused you to feel strongly about the need for action. You will also indicate all that will be required for effective action and all the necessary steps for the action to be realized. How soon this possible action will materialize should be your primary concern. Readers need to know this. What obstacles might be encountered along the way? Are there any necessary steps you should take to make sure that the action you propose will materialize as expected? Is there any evidence you can use to show that your call to action is practical, reasonable, and can be effective? Your paper should be completed, as any research paper proposal should be.
One last point I would like to point out is to use different parts of speech in your paper. Use more adjectives; they will add more color and personality to your paper.
