Project type:

The idea was to propose a new kind of workspace based in the way city and industry are becoming one due to environmental friendly technologies. Information exchange is the key of new industries and not just the final physical product. My research was about how the workspace is not something we can limit to 4 walls and a roof, we can make a phone call while walking on the street or have an skype interview from home like we are doing today, so that the city has become an extension of the office. We assume this condition. But my question is, should not the same thing happen the other way around? Why don’t we introduce cities diversity and complexity into globalized workspaces to make them more open and creatives? Big tech companies like Google or FB make huge efforts training their employees and creating sharing-ideas spaces where people who work there could have unexpected encounters, but they forget to relate with the city itself. They build their campus-style complex out of the cities, like big shopping malls connected with infinity highways. They are connected with the whole planet, but don’t interact with their immediate surroundings. This project proposes to reintroduce this new and cleaner industry into the city, including the educational process in a more open way, being able to generate spaces for the exchange of impressions. That way, company learns from the city, and the city does it from the company.

The main intention was to create diagonal relations in section, so that the heart of the building would be the place where the workspace and the city interact. The building goes over the street that cross the whole site and there is a mobility device that organice the different flows of the building. That way, we connect the city that goes under the building with the level one where we design open-air spaces for exhibitions, workshop and other activities. The building itself is organized following the different stages of creativity, from learning to testing, being the street in the air the place for both of them at the same time. The other activities that happens around are related to concept development, brain-storming or informal encounters between users. All these activities feed the action happening in the street on level one. The structure was an important design element. It challenges gravity and become the facade of the building, allowing interior spaces to be free of column. That way spaces could be more flexible and open to changes in future configurations.
